An Afternoon in Saint Lucia
Saint Lucia - or as I like to call it, Saint Luscious - is home to authentic food, interesting politics and beautiful landscape. Here’s how to make the most of your afternoon on the island.
Take a private bus tour.
This doesn’t always sound ideal, but when you’ve been in the sun all week, it can be nice to just sit down and do some sightseeing. After porting, we found a guy to take us all around St. Lucia (for only $25).
The ride took us through:
their college (which is much different from the U.S)
governor's mansion (their governor is a woman, and they are very proud of that)
cliff with volcanic views
banana plantation, where we got to pick our own
an old cathedral downtown (very beautiful, I’d recommend even if you don’t do the tour)
The tour gave us a good feel for the island, and locals, we otherwise wouldn’t have on our own.
Walk the farmer’s market.
In their downtown area, there’s tons of fresh produce and art. They say venturing too far - on this particular island - can attract pick-pockets, but this was close enough for safety.
Authentic alley food.
Near the farmer’s market, we discovered an alley filled with restaurants (mostly locals eating their during their break). I have no idea what I was actually eating, but the portions were huge and it was all delicious.
Rum punch.
Before you go, grab a drink near the port while you’re waiting. They’ve got good, cheap rum punch.
When visiting Alaska, it’s all about layers: being comfortable and staying warm.
