Things to Do in Galway, Ireland

Galway has become one of Ireland’s most desired cities to live in. The harbor city features medieval sites, heavenly food and a lively pub scene.

I only spent a few days in this fairytale-esque town, but I’ve nearly been convinced to move there myself. .

Hang out in Eyre Square Park. Located in the heart of Galway, this is a nice area to relax and hang out with locals - many of which seem to be college students. Here, you’ll also find a few historic pieces, including the Galway Hooker and a bust of John F. Kennedy (this was his final stop before his assassination).

Inishmore, Aran Islands.

Take a day trip to the Aran Islands. If you’re in the area, this is something you won’t want to miss. You can take the ferry over from Galway Bay (45 minute ride). Wondering what to do on the islands? Read about it here.

Visit Galway Cathedral. One of the largest buildings in the city, this was one of the last stone cathedrals to be built in Europe.

Join a pub crawl. For only 15 euros, you can enter a four-stop pub crawl where you’ll receive four free shots and a potato - whoever has the most potatoes at the end of the night wins a shirt. Fair warning, competition is fierce and it can escalate real quick.

Go for a seaside jog along South Park. This views along this path were stunning - a cute little lighthouse, tons of boats, green space and wide open ocean. If I were a resident, I’d be making this an every day route for an early morning coffee stroll.

Enjoy live music on Quay Street. At any time of day, you can find all different types of artists busking in the streets.

Pop into a pub or five. I’m going to miss just hanging out in a pub. The food is always good, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting (and sometimes there’s live music). Here’s my list of Galway Pubs and Restaurants.

Ride the trolley train. I’m not sure I’d fully recommend this, but if you’re tired of walking and want to sit down, have a drink and see a few sights around town, this wasn’t the worst option (and only $10). It gives you a history of Galway, while making a few stops around the city - giving you about 10 minutes to wander at each.
