How to Spend the Day in Inishmore, Aran Islands

Medieval ruins, Aran sweaters and the Gaelic language are a few of the amazing things you’ll find on the Aran Islands.

Visiting Inishmore was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. We took the morning ferry over from Galway Bay (45 minute ride), and a short bus ride up to Dún Aonghasa - I’d highly recommend this, as the fort dates back to 1,000 BC.

The trek to the top was quite difficult. It’s rocky and takes about 15 minutes, but all ages are able. While you’re in the area, buy an Aran sweater (it’s suggested you only buy them on the island - to ensure authenticity and support small businesses).

Then, grab a bite to eat at The Puffin’s Nest Cafe - it’s one of the best meals I’ve ever had.

I ordered the tomato basil soup with a side of soda bread, but apparently their Irish Stew is the best you’ll find. After, pop over to the fudge and/or ice cream shop (try the honeycomb - you won’t regret it!)

In town, you can shop around, get a drink at The Bar, or take a bike around the island (they’ve got seals, puffins and tons of neat homes).

This was one of my most favorite days ever - I mean, every day in Ireland was, but this one stands out. My visit to the Aran Islands was booked through EF Ultimate Break, as an extra excursion on my tour. If you’re interested in solo-traveling with a group, with little to zero planning - check them out.
