Top 6 Onscreen Homes to Visit
Here are the filming locations of six onscreen homes you can visit.
Whenever on vacation, I like to take some time driving through neighborhoods checking out the different real estate and architectural styles. What really takes the drive up a notch is coming up on a home I recognize from my favorite movies and shows.
The Parent Trap (1998) The home of Hallie, Nick and Chessy
📍 Staglin Family Vineyard (1570 Bella Oaks Lane, Rutherford, CA)
Nancy Meyers is not only an excellent filmmaker, but she also has a keen eye for the type of home her characters would live in – and one of my favorites is the Northern California Vineyard estate that Annie and Hallie’s (Lindsay Lohan) father (Dennis Quaid) resides in.
Watching Lohan and Quaid live the vineyard’s acreage style life – of horseback riding, relaxing by the pool, and inviting the estranged mother of your children down into the family wine cellar – solidified my dream to eventually own the home. Oddly, that has yet to happen. However, there’s good news: the vineyard, owned by The Staglin Family, is open for private tours and wine tastings. Book your tour here.
The Sopranos (1999-2007)
📍Tony Soprano’s House (14 Aspen Dr North Caldwell, NJ)
Located in a North Caldwell, New Jersey neighborhood, is a home belonging to one of television’s most beloved families. Take a drive through the cul de sac, end glance up the driveway – it’s easy to picture Tony Soprano coming down in a bathrobe to get the paper.
While the home has always been privately owned, the interior was also used for filming and remains in the same condition.
Home Alone (1990)
📍Kevin McCallister’s House (671 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka, IL)
There’s been a few changes to the McCallister home since the 90s, but it’s still unmistakably the brick house we’re welcomed back into each holiday season. While you’re there, don’t forget to look across the street at Mitch Murphy’s home, where Kevin is eventually caught by the Wet Bandits.
If you’re interested in the filming of this Chicago estate and how it came together, watch The Movies that Made Us on Netflix before your visit.
Ozark (2017-)
📍Byrde Family Home (next door to 6802 Gaines Ferry Rd, Flowery Branch, GA)
Missouri wasn’t a state I considered vacation worthy until the premier of Jason Bateman’s Netflix series, Ozark. While very little of the show is actually filmed in the Ozarks, you can still visit the filming locations, including the Byrde home, outside Atlanta, Georgia.
The address of the home itself is unlisted, but it is located next door to the one I have given – both homes share one property address, as they have the same owner. The property to the Byrde home is gated, but you will be able to see the front of the house from the street. While you’re there, keep an eye out for Sam’s house (Wendy’s real estate partner), as it’s on the same street.
Something’s Gotta Give (2003)
📍 Diane’s Beach Home (576 Meadow Ln Southampton, NY)
Another home from a Nancy Meyer’s film is this beautiful Southampton beach house that Diane Keaton’s character lives in.
There are a lot of beautiful homes in this area, and most of them are gated with hedges – The Something’s Gotta Give home is no different – however, you should still be able to catch a glimpse from the gate.
If you can’t make your way over to New York, there’s a Wisconsin lake house inspired by the original — which I think is brilliant.
The Proposal (2009)
📍The Sitka House (Gales Point Road)
Having traveled to Alaska, I was surprised to find The Proposal wasn’t actually filmed in Sitka, but in Massachusetts.
The Manchester home was used for both its interior and exterior, but the interior got an incredible temporary makeover where they built a set inside each room to give the place a more rustic feel. The surrounding landscape was added in the editing room.
Other locations for the movie were filmed in the small town of Rockport, which isn’t far from the home. If you’re boating in the Manchester Bay area, come up on Ram Island just as they did in the film – you’ll get a great view of the estate from the water.
