Morristown, NJ - What to do on Your Visit to this Historic Town

Morristown is exactly what I imagine Gilmore Girls to be like - a small town feel, and yet there always seems to be something going on. With a history dating back to the 1700s, and a lively nightlife, Morristown has the best of both worlds.

The Green

The Green

Explore Morristown’s History.

Ford Mansion. Morristown has colonial roots, as the town played a strategic role for George Washington during the Revolutionary War, during which he took residence at the Ford Mansion.

The Green is a historic park located in the center of downtown. It has beautiful gardens, landmarks, and statues - including one of George Washington meeting Alexander Hamilton, and another (painted) of the seeing-eye dog pioneers. (Also, the park is full of gray squirrels.)

Dublin Neighborhood dates back to the mid 1800s, as it was the center of Irish immigrant life.

Take in the sights.

Beautiful homes. If you take a walk through the town - and I highly suggest that you do, considering the town is very pedestrian friendly - you’ll notice homes that are heavily influenced by German architecture, as well as large colonial style estates. If you enjoy architecture, you’ll be very pleased with the Morristown real estate.

Churches. As you walk through Morristown, especially near the downtown, there seems to be a church in view at all times - and they’re all designed beautifully. I particularly love the United Methodist Church, which can be seen from The Green.

Eat + Drink

The Committed Pig

Enjoy breakfast at The Committed Pig. They serve you an entire thermos of coffee, so you’re never exposed to the annoyance of an empty cup. If you enjoy a sweet breakfast, I’d highly recommend their ‘Strawberry Shortcake French Toast’. You can check out the rest of their menu here

German cuisine. Grab a drink at Revolution. They’ve got 40 beers on tap and serve traditional German food (and late night bar appetizers). This bar is also located among many other fun spots, including night clubs, pubs and a speakeasy disguised as a laundromat.

Try a bagel with Taylor Ham. You can find one at Time for a Bagel, located just outside of town in Morris Plains. (Not sure what that is? Read about the Taylor Ham Debate here.)

Morristown is located 30 miles from Manhattan, and has a train that will take you straight to Penn Station in just over an hour.
